Script V2

Introducing the Detective

Detective: Hey! You! Yeah, you! Private Detective Hayes here, and I have a job for you. We can't talk here, this transmission is short range only. Follow the directions of your compass, I'll talk to you when you get in range.

Detective: Nice work! Now, I've been contacted by an anonymous, er, contact. They call themselves Static. Here is the transmission I got:

Static: Detective, I'm contacting you because I believe that a member of the Wellington Environmental Conservation Group, of which I am a member, is planning an act of eco-terrorisim! I can't say any more, please look into the matter immediately. Static out.

Detective: So, you heard the man. Woman. Static thing. I'm afraid I have pressing matters to attend to, I havn't eaten for at least half an hour and need a bite to eat. Go talk to each of them, gather some info, then come find me back here and report what you've found out. Grab me some lunch while you're out, would you?

Businesswoman: Miss Vaine, what can I do for you today? Oh, you're here about the WECG? I'm afraid I don't play a very big part in their work, I have a financial interest in the eco-work that businesses here are involved with. You'd be supprised the variation of how much companies do and care for the environment. Before you buy a product, make sure you know the impact or improvements it's going to have for the environment. Anyway, I can't help you any more, meeting in 5 minutes. Good luck!

Officer: Constable Keen speaking. Oh, hey there, kid, here about the WECG? I just joined the other day, they seem like a bunch of oddballs to me, but they have potential to make a difference. I just wanna do my bit too! You'd be supprised how the right words in the right places can make such a big difference. If you want to know any more, give me a call first, I'm a busy guy!

Hippie: Woooooooaaaaah! Man! Freakin out! I mean maaaaaaan! *hicup* oooh. You know, if we stood here for 5 years, at this rate, the water level would be over our freakin heads! Not cool! Global warming isn't all fun and games man, I've felt it! It feels baaaaad. Catch you later! Name's Kook, by the way *thud*

Scientist: Helleewww! A pleasure to make your aquaintance! I am Professor Brayke! You've caught me at an inopportune moment, when I'm just about to make the first test run of my Matter Interpolator! It can fling matter from a small area for miles! Very hand for getting rid of criminals and mothers in law! If I ever had a mother in law. None the less! Call back later, I'll let you know how it went!

Terrible news! Professor Brake's Mother whatsinamer has been stolen! Who knows what could be done with that thing! Luckily it wasn't finished, and required a large area to be set up and a large amount of cash to be completed. So, I need you to go back out there, question people, find motives, evidence, detectivey kinda things. But be descrete!. I'll do my own investigating, let you know what I find! Good luck!

Scientist: You heard about the Matter Interpolator? This isn't good! You realize that if that thing gets into the wrong hands, think what could be done with it!? The version I created was a small one, but the blueprints to make a large scale one have also been taken! You realize that if the amount of trash that exists in one of the landfills near here alone would cover this city up to it's ankles? I mean... ewww!

Hippie: Hey! Welcome back! Oh, you wanna know about the members of the group? Well, the boss told me not to tell you, but I guess cos you're sooo nice, it's okay!! The scientist guy was the dude who came up with the idea for this group, he would do anythin to make a difference. The Cop is thinker, always got something on his mind, he's a tough guy! Mmm business lady just joined us, she seems a little (leans closer) up herself? Me? I'm just cool, I go with whatever, want to help everyone! Wanted to give something back, changed my ways after my army days. Anyway, chill out! Everything is gonna be cool.

Cop: Oh, you again? I told you I'm busy! Oh, that thing of Brayke's was stolen? Hmm sounds dangerous, I'll look into it. I can’t imagine that anyone would even be able to understand his crazy contraptions. Sounds dangerous. I guess people should have payed more attention to his work. Not many people tend to listen to people like us though. Hmm. Anyway, good luck with the investigation! I’d be happy to help you put people behind bars!

Static: I've been looking into the Mass Interpolator. To build it would require considerable funds. A similar fund was recently stolen from a large bank by an ex-military renegade group, but the money disappeared after they were apprehended. Static out.

Businesswoman: Back again? Oh, the Mass Interpolator was stolen? That isn’t good. I heard it could do some dangerous things. If only someone was smart enough to find out who stole it, hmmm? Oh, you want financial records for the bank that was robbed? I’m afraid I can’t just give them out, thats confidential information.

Detective: Static contacted me again, they said that they are detecting the charge up energies of a giant mass thingimie. You must have worked out who has it by now, right? Get over there, I'll activate the jamming signal on your ipac so you can stop it activating while I go apprehend them! Good luck!

Script!

Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000168 EndHTML:0000007240 StartFragment:0000000489 EndFragment:0000007223

Psst! You! Yeah you! I need your help! Big things are afoot! Big things! Come to a more secure place to talk, down by the cafe.

Good, you made it! Dire things are afoot! I've received word from an anonymous source that a group of environmentalists are doing something, of some sort. I think. I wasn't really listening. Sounded urgent. Go investigate for me, I'll contact you again after my lunch.

Amazing! Just as my calculations predicted! I'm glad you came, we're in big trouble. If you look at these charts, you can see that within the next (FACT) years, litter will have quintuplied to the point where it'll be up to our knees, and (FACT) years later to our shoulders! Can you scan some rubbish heavy areas for me, I'll mark them on your compass!

Where do you think you're going? Watch your compass, remember! And try stay out of the back alleys?

Excelent work! These figures will prove most usefull. I have a business companion who could also use your assistance; If you can get in touch with her in the business district that would be most helpfull!

Hello there, what can I do for you? Oh, scientist name sent you? (scornfully) Well, I suppose you'll have to do. Have a walk down the street, I want you to gather figures on expenditure from businesses around this area, find out what they are investing in. Remember to wipe your feet.

Businesswoman finishes talking, go find the cop

I'm supprised, you didn't stuff up. Well, why not keep being usefull and have a word with the police constable down the road, he seems to be your kind of man, and could use your help.

Hey, Civilian, you're the one who's been helping my friends out? Tell me, could you sort through this paperwork for me? Should be simple enough.

Nice work, saved me some time better spent elsewhere. Mind going down to the park and having a word to a friend of mine? The damn hippy has been going psycho recently, complete nutjob.

On the way over, you get a mysterious call>

All is not what it seems friend, be extra cautious ahead.

Hey man! You won't believe what's goin on! Dude, this is totally un-rad. I was just here trippin out, and totally felt the temperature rise like 5 degrees! You know the environment is screwed if that happens man, the plant life will be replaced with more craaazy stuff, the disseases will infect all the cute ass critters and birds will be like unable to lay eggs on time or summin.

Scientist and Detective talk, stop the scientist

Hey! Stop what you're doing, I have bad bad news! NAME the scientist just broadcast this message across the city! You have to stop him!

“Tremble in fear, citizens! My trashportation device will soon activate, transporting massive amounts of litter from dumps over the world to the center of Wellington City, and you shall drown in your own filth! Bahahaha”

Mysterous contact: Get over there! Use the program he gave you to disrupt his signals!

Scientist defeated, stop the hippie

Nice work! Wait, my signal is being cut >>>

Duuude, I totally saw what you just did! Sweet moves! Dunno if it will be fast enough to stop my GIANT GLOBAL WARMING REALLY WARM ROCK THING! Yeeaaaaaaaaahhhh

Damnit! Get over there and see what the hippie is up to!

Duuuuuuude, I'm totally busted. Thanks for nothing, man.

You better head over and check the business lady isn't up to any sabotage either! >Cop name and I will finish up here.

What, you idiot! I was the person who tipped the detective off, and who contacted you before! The cop is the leader of them all, they're probably all walking free now! Get over to the station and stop whatever he was planning!

Get over here now! The cop was thei... *thud*

Looks like the jig is up, cupcake. Time to say goodbye to your precious city, as we cover it in polution. So long, douchebag.

Get over there, imbecile, and stop him!

Ha, the detonation sequence is wireless, but at least you'll be able to see the thing go off first hand now!

Use your ipaq jamming signal, and try find the damned sequence on that bomb.

Ha, you've just wasted your last minutes running round like a headless chicken. I can still detonate the entire thing at once with this button he... *oof*

Ah, just in time it seems. Good work.

Nice work, kid. You did me proud. You'll be a top notch detective like me in no time!

The Story So Far

On discovering that bloging is a requirement of the project, I decided to write down all my achievements so far.

Pendulum Theory

I decided on using a black ribbon and an old pocketwatch to create my pendulum. The pendulum will be placed in the center of the atrium, and 'should' reach to the top of the third story.

I tested the pendulum in action, and discovered that it lost momentum very quickly. This is largely due to the wind resistance, but also the scale of the device makes it ungainly and hard to move. I have decided to motorise the motion to a point, to keep the pendulum swinging.

Electronics

I purchased a motor and a number of buttons that would be placed over the area. The remote controlled car transmitter was over my budget, so I am going to place wires over the space of the area. The motor works functionally, and I have wired it up to the arduino so I can give it as much of a power supply as I need to produce the forces needed to move the pendulum.

Puzzles

The puzzles will be divided into three stages. First, navigational puzzles, attempting to comprehend the vague directions of the private detective. Secondly, environmental learning puzzles, where you solve puzzles without time constraints and learn about the environment at the same time. Then, after a dramatic plot development, the timed puzzles come into play, advanced versions of the environmental and navigational puzzles that have dire consequences if failed!

Storyline

The sky is sinisterly sunny, the clouds waft overhead like agents of the cities destruction. A malicious jingle echoes down the street, as the iPac rings. A call is to be picked up.
A dark, brooding figure stares at our protagonist through the screen of the device. "Greetings, friend. I have dark work for you, and time is of the essence. The agents of our very destruction are on the move, and there may or may not be explosions." He clears his throat. "Whether there is or is not, is up to you."

"Come to the clocktower before the stroke of midday, and we will best be able to talk. If you are late, it could mean the end of all of us."

Our protagonist makes his way down the street littered with broken dreams and, well, litter. Upon reaching the clocktower, the ipac rings again. Again, the figure answers.

"Thankyou for coming. I knew I might be able to count on you. I've bought you here so you can see firsthand the trouble we face. I have been contacted by a number of informats, who have told me that the city is a walking timebomb. Enviromentalists, you see. Apparently, 10 years down the track, this whole city will have destroyed itself with it's own filth. Not only that, but they suggested that some key locations for this corruption could be the target of terrorist activity!" The sound of a thunderclap echoes across the park, as the shadowy figure slips and his lamp goes crashing off his desk.

He rights himself, and continues: "It's now in your hands. I'm afraid I have a dentist appointment I can't miss, so I want you to talk to these people and ask what they're on about. You can meet their leader at *location*. Go now. Time is of the essence."

"I will contact you after meeting the *man/woman*. Lets hope you're in time. Seriously. Don't take 10 years to get there."
